Three piece soul vocal group formed in the mid-80's by songwriter David Townsend (son of singer/songwriter Ed Townsend), multi-instrumentalist David “Pic” Conley and singer/songwriter/lead vocalist Bernard Jackson.

Originally they were staff writers for EMI providing songs for the likes Gwen Guthrie and Sister Sledge. In 1987 they charted with “Happy,” from their debut album "Surface".  Further hits and a second album "2nd Wave" followed in 1990.

1991 saw the release of "3 Deep" and a greatest hits compilation "A Nice Time for Lovin'", from here  Townsend and Conley concentrated on song writing until the groups return with "Love Zone" in 1998.

In 2005 they announced a reunion tour and the recording of a new album, however, David Townsend passed away October 29, 2005 at age 50 before the album was completed.

In 2015 Conley, who began his career as part of the influential funk band Mandrill, is back with singer John Feva to form an updated version of Surface, now called Re Surface. Their first album release was  "Where Have You Been".
